Better solutions for better results

When Prealize reached out, they wanted to scale their current process: bringing in data from the customers, analyzing, modeling it out in a custom report, and then providing it to customers.

They needed products that provided their customers with a  "self-service" experience where they can slice and dice their own data and gain more control over how they view it.

We started mapping out one of their key products. Based on their basic methods to create customer reports, we generated current state flows and iterated those into ideal state flows that they could build into their digital tools.

The first challenge in this project was gaining a good understanding of the business. As a niche design firm, we are always looking to deepen our knowledge in the healthcare industry. Our design team was particularly excited about learning the specific terminologies and jargon related to Prealize's business.

Once the key product flows were defined, we worked on the wireframes, and from those, we moved to high-fidelity designs. While we built the latter, we worked on a design system, designing all the components we would need to build the prototypes (and extra components they could need in the future). Prealize had basic style guides that we applied to the design system - predominantly, their primary color.

We worked in conjunction with their developers during the coding process for each component in the design system. We wanted to empower them as much as possible to handle future product features and iterations.

The work we did on copy for the product was simple but impactful. The labels they used internally that transposed to the product design had to be properly re-nominated to communicate with users in a way that they could understand.

Designing the second product from their suite, we used a very similar approach. This time the design system was already finalized and we could apply it seamlessly to the prototypes which made the process considerably faster.

Proactive design

Once we’ve reached this stage the design process speeds up. We pull from a set of components that we have already established and their developers are able to build from these. This also enabled us to move to advisory-focused work. It became less about creating the actual UX and UI and much more about how we solve problems.

With our advisory work, during two working sessions a month, we enabled the head of product Eileen to plan for future features and road-mapping for their product development team. We are providing her with tools to tell her story.

We also currently continue to support the development team - who are now more independent as they rely on the design system we created. We provide insights/feedback and they have an open channel of communication to share ideas and ask for help.

Prealize are true experts in their industry and were a unique client for us. 

Very open to collaboration, they trusted us to carry out their design work and we trusted them to provide us with all of the crucial information we needed. Our work cadence consisted of weekly meetings during the first part of the project and two meetings a month when we completed the design and transitioned to advisory work. Working in this way establishes a rhythm that allows predictability and preparation. 

The presence of one decision maker, one data modeling expert, and one user advocate (someone with years of experience providing healthcare services) all along the process was the perfect combination, allowing the project to run smoothly on both ends.*
